Mastercard is expanding its presence in the field of stablecoin payments, introducing a new product designed to solve a pressing problem in the field of digital payments. The solution, called Stablecoin Security, was presented on October 19, 2026 at the annual Money20/20 USA conference in Las Vegas. The main purpose of the system is to enable financial organizations to assess the risks associated with fraud, fraud, violation of sanctions regimes and other financial crimes even before conducting a transaction on the blockchain. To do this, Stablecoin Security integrates traditional payment analysis techniques with blockchain analytics capabilities. The first partners in this initiative were Borderless companies.xyz and Keyrails.

The functionality of Stablecoin Security is implemented through an independent API. The system analyzes in detail the context of the transaction, the origin of funds, possible connections with persons under restrictions, and other indicators of potential fraud. Based on the data obtained, an assessment of the risk level is formed, which becomes available before the actual transfer of funds. This allows banks and payment providers to promptly identify and investigate suspicious activity before the stablecoins are sent to the recipient. Ann Johnson, executive vice president of security at Mastercard, emphasized that despite the new opportunities that stablecoins open up for value movements, financial institutions need reliable tools for analysis and control. According to her, combining data from traditional payment systems with blockchain analytics provides a more complete picture of digital asset transactions and related risks.

The relevance of this product is due to the complexity that is often hidden behind seemingly simple stablecoin payments. A study conducted by Mastercard showed that almost 60% of transactions with stablecoins on the Ethereum network in 2025 were multi-stage schemes, rather than direct transfers. For banks, this means the need to understand the sources of funds, intermediaries and identify possible suspicious transactions at each stage. The more links there are in the chain, the more difficult it is to assess risks in real time.

Mastercard gives an example of a coffee shop from Boston that buys grains in Brazil. Before sending a payment in stablecoins, the bank can assess the risks through the service provider and decide whether additional verification is needed. As a result, the supplier receives the payment, converts the stablecoins, and the bank receives valuable analytical information without requiring a complete change in existing payment schemes.

Borderless has already joined the project.xyz and Keyrails, participants in the Mastercard Start Path Blockchain and Digital Assets program. Borderless.xyz helps fintech companies find licensed stablecoin issuers in more than 113 countries, and Keyrails specializes in international trade payments, including in emerging markets. Rajpal Khangura of Keyrails emphasized that global trade needs a reliable infrastructure for stablecoin settlements, which confirms Mastercard's focus on data verification.

Initially, Stablecoin Security will be available in North America, with a global launch planned by 2027. The acquisition of BVNK, a company specializing in stablecoin infrastructure, will also facilitate expansion. It is important to note that although payments in stablecoins can take place on decentralized networks, Mastercard offers a centralized analytical layer for risk assessment by financial institutions before making a transaction. Thus, Stablecoin Security does not replace the blockchain, but complements it, giving banks the opportunity to make more informed decisions.
