The European digital asset market no longer belongs only to crypto startups with rockets on logos and promises of "to the moon". Now classical banking capital is quietly and methodically entering there. The Spanish depository Cecabank is one of them. He obtains licenses, opens branches and expands the regulated field. This time in Luxembourg.

At the center of the story is MiCA. In 2025, Cecabank became the first Spanish B2B depository with a license under the "Crypto Asset Markets" directive. Commercial storage of cryptocurrencies was launched in May 2026. But the MiCA license doesn't work like a suitcase that you can take with you to a neighboring country. It is valid only where it is issued. In order to expand beyond Spain, the bank has started the process of obtaining a European passport, which will extend the regulation to Luxembourg, Ireland and Portugal.

Institutional clients will have access to digital currencies, stablecoins, and tokenized assets with the same security and compliance standards as classic instruments. This is not an attempt to please crypto enthusiasts, but the embedding of digital assets into the usual banking system — with audit, compliance and reporting.

Cecabank is a B2B infrastructure provider. It does not compete with retail exchanges and does not convince private investors to buy ether. Its goal is to enable banks to store crypto assets, execute orders, and make transfers without creating their own technology stacks. The bank offers rails that others can ride on without inventing a locomotive.

The strategy is based on two infrastructures. The first is a pan—European network based on a distributed registry with a center in Luxembourg for tokenized assets. Cecabank is one of its founders. The second is a consortium of 37 banks working on a 1:1 euro-pegged stablecoin for payments and settlements. The project is awaiting a license from the Central Bank of the Netherlands, launching in the second half of 2026. This is no longer an experiment of individuals, but an attempt at a collective infrastructure.

In July 2026, Cecabank participated in the first Spanish interbank tokenized deposit test. Banks checked the automation of calculations, keeping the requirements on the balance sheet. Simply put, they learned how to count digital money without taking it out of a traditional safe.

"18 months after the branch opened, we are confident that the decision was the right one," said Brenda Bol, head of the representative office in Luxembourg. Having strengthened its position in the Bankers' association, Cecabank is finalizing the MiCA passport for working with digital assets for local institutions. Luxembourg is a convenient springboard: a small jurisdiction with strong banking traditions and clear regulations.
