Brazil's National Data Protection Authority (ANPD) has announced the suspension of the Worldcoin project in the country. The project, founded by OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, offered rewards in cryptocurrency for providing biometric data, including retinal scans.
The ANPD decision is related to concerns that financial incentives may affect the voluntary consent of users, especially those in vulnerable situations. The authorities stressed that the collected data is irreversible and cannot be deleted.Worldcoin previously faced similar regulatory challenges in Germany, where the project was required to comply with GDPR. Also, the value of the WLD token decreased by 8% after the ban was announced, which confirms the negative impact of the decision on the project.
The Worldcoin project uses technology to create a universal digital identifier, but its implementation has raised concerns about privacy and user data protection.
