The liquidators of the bankrupt Cryptopia cryptocurrency exchange have begun the process of paying compensation to victims of the 2019 hacker attack. Grant Thornton has confirmed that more than 10,000 users have already received their assets worth $225 million.
A hacker attack on Cryptopia, New Zealand's largest cryptocurrency exchange, in January 2019 led to the theft of $16 million. Liquidation of the company began in 2020, and since then Grant Thornton has been working on asset recovery.
The company continues to process user requests through the registration portal, which was launched earlier. The remaining assets can be redistributed among registered clients, and those who have not applied risk losing their funds.
