Dubai-based Emirates NBD has launched a cross-border dollar transfer service with instant settlements. This innovation operates on the Partior multi-currency clearing platform, leveraging distributed ledger technology. Since July 14, the service has been available to corporate and institutional clients. The first partner to accept funds was the American giant JPMorgan.

Previously, such transfers took one to three days due to complex correspondent chains. Now, funds are received almost instantly. In the pilot project, JPMorgan acted as both the intermediary and the recipient bank. Successful testing has allowed Emirates NBD to move forward with a full-scale launch. Instant payments are currently only available to recipients with a JPMorgan account, but the bank promises this limitation is temporary.

This launch is just the first step in Emirates NBD's extensive program to develop multicurrency payments. Plans include connecting other leading global banks to the Partior network, expanding the number of supported currencies and settlement corridors. Additionally, the introduction of programmable liquidity management tools that automate treasury operations is expected. Therefore, the current launch of dollar payments is a starting point.

The launch was made possible through a strategic partnership, which includes Emirates NBD's equity participation in Partior through its Innovation Fund. The bank acts as a co-owner of the infrastructure, not simply a user. Anit Daniel, Head of Transaction Business at Emirates NBD, emphasized the transition from agreements to actual implementation, noting the security, scalability, and reliability of the Partior network.

Partior CEO Humphrey Valenbreder noted the synergy between Emirates NBD's presence in the region and Partior's technology platform, which facilitates transparent and fast transactions. The primary objective now is to expand the participant network and currency coverage, which will increase the ecosystem's value for everyone.

This project is part of Emirates NBD's ten-year digital transformation. Since 2016, the bank has invested in upgrading its IT infrastructure, launched its first mobile bank, Liv, created a sandbox for fintech startups, and the Souq API portal. At the same time, the bank is exploring decentralized finance in its Digital Asset Lab and collaborating with Techstars to find AI solutions. All these initiatives support the bank's systemic strategy for digital transformation.

Globally, financial institutions are increasingly using distributed ledgers to modernize legacy correspondent systems, improve transparency, and speed up cross-border transactions.
