In response to growing concerns about privacy and security, South Korean regulators have decided to block downloads of the DeepSeek app through official platforms such as Google Play, Apple App Store, and others. According to the Digital Authority, DeepSeek may pose a risk to users because the app’s data collection and processing do not meet established security standards.
Authorities warn that the app could be used by scammers to access sensitive information, which is especially relevant in the context of the rapidly growing cryptocurrency sector. South Korean users who try to download DeepSeek will receive a notice of the block until the developers bring the product into compliance with local regulations.
The Personal Information Protection Commission (PIPC) said in a statement on February 17 that DeepSeek agreed to suspend new downloads on February 15 and work with the agency to strengthen privacy protections before relaunching.
The decision highlights the government’s efforts to protect digital infrastructure and citizen safety amid the rapid development of new technologies.
