The European Central Bank has taken up the creation of a digital currency, hoping to launch it approximately by 2029. In parallel with the technological side of the issue, work is underway on the regulatory framework, because for the launch it is necessary that all EU countries approve the relevant laws. The situation is complicated by the fact that it is necessary to take into account the opinions of various government agencies and financial organizations, which differ in their approaches.

The main debate is about how the future digital currency will work. The European Central Bank is offering an option where the digital euro will work as another payment method, along with cash and bank accounts. Special attention is paid to protection from cyber threats and the safety of personal information, because the system must guarantee the same confidentiality as when using conventional banknotes.

Many countries in the world are interested in digital currencies. According to the Atlantic Council, 49 countries are currently testing such currencies. But so far, only Nigeria, the Bahamas and Jamaica have officially launched them. The European project stands out for its scale and importance, because the euro is one of the main world currencies.

The Foundation for the Protection of Human Rights notes that CBDC can make payments faster and more accessible, but there are also serious risks of abuse by the authorities. It is the balance between the pros and cons that is the main issue in discussions about the digital euro.
In general, launching a digital euro is not an easy task, with a lot of nuances. To make everything work out, you need to resolve a lot of issues, ranging from technical issues to political trends and public opinion.
