Telegram representatives commented on the detention of the messenger’s creator Pavel Durov in France, noting that they hope for a “quick resolution of this matter.” The statement emphasized that Telegram complies with EU law, including the Digital Services Act, and that the platform’s moderation system operates in accordance with industry standards and is constantly being improved.
It was also stated that Durov has nothing to hide, and that accusations that the platform’s owner is responsible for abuses on it are ridiculous.
Durov was detained on August 25 at Le Bourget Airport in Paris. At the time of publication, his detention period has been extended by 48 hours, during which a judge must either charge him or release him.
French authorities claim that Telegram’s lack of moderation and the platform’s refusal to cooperate with law enforcement implicate Durov in crimes committed using the messenger, including terrorism, drug trafficking, fraud, and money laundering.
